Finding the Rule

A rule is an equation that describes the relationshiip between the xx-coordinate and the yy-coordinate in a table or graph.

y=coefficient×x+constanty = coefficient \times x + constant

the coefficeient of x will be the increase in y as x increases by 1.

  1. do you havea known coordinate for x=0x = 0?
    • if yes y value is the constant
    • if no do step 2 first
  2. Is x values are going up one?
    • if yes -> change in y-value = voeffivient on x
  3. write eqn of line
  4. if couldn't do step 1 substitute a coordinate to find the constant
  1. can't do
  2. coefficient
  3. y = ?x + ?
  4. substitue a coordinate
